Why You Should Care About Ayurveda

What do dry skin, cracking joints, anxiety and constipation have in common? If you're a practitioner or student of ayurevda, you'll easily recognize that these symptoms are connected to the same underlying imbalance. The same is true, for example, of acid indigestion, competitiveness, anger, diarrhea and some eye conditions. From an allopathic medical perspective, these conditions seem completely unrelated.

It's not unusual for each of us to have a number of physical and emotional idiosyncrasies we experience routinely. The most common include:
*heartburn
*dry skin and hair
*insomnia
*self doubt
*constipation
*diarrhea
*rashes
*elevated blood pressure
*gas, bloating
*
acne
*
depression
*stiff joints
*
tendency to overheat
*tendency to be cold
*irritability
*
lethargy
*anxiety
*weight gain
*elevated blood sugar

*elevated cholesterol
*repeated colds or infections
*loneliness

Most of these symptoms aren't considered particularly serious in Western medicine. You might mention them to your doctor, take some over-the-counter drugs, drink some herbal tea or then again, you may not even think to talk about them because there's nothing "wrong".  Not so in ayurveda.  Ayurveda recognizes all of these as sub-clinical expressions of imbalance that, left unchecked, may become more serious and lead to disease.

With the help of an ayurvedic practitioner, you'll begin to see the connections between seemingly unrelated conditions and the underlying causes of imbalance.  Once identified, sometimes simple changes in the foods we eat or our daily habits can alleviate these imbalances.  Not all are easily or quickly fixed but it's surprising what can happen when you start on the path to balance.
