Triphala

Description/Directions:
Triphala is the most widely recommended ayurvedic herbal formulation.  Suitable for all doshas, Triphala has a unique ability to cleanse and detoxify the body gently while simultaneously replenishing and nourishing it.

Triphala is traditionally used to maintain a healthy digestive tract. It gently increases the strength of digestive fire while removing toxins from the intestines and colon.  It is commonly taken for digestive sluggishness, constipation, bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and indigestion.

In conditions of excess weight, Triphala can be used as part of a program that includes a healthy diet and exercise.  Triphala helps control overeating and food cravings by supplying the body with five of the six tastes.  According to the ayurvedic system, each food contains one or more of the six tastes:  sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.  Our diets ideally should contain all six tastes.  Triphala contains every taste but salty.

I sell two versions:  powder and Ayurveda Organics capsules.  Triphala powder is the recommended medium because tasting the herbs is considered to be therapeutic.  Triphala, however, can be a strong and unpleasant taste for some individuals.  If you don't like the taste, buy the capsules (I recommend opening a capsule or two and pouring the contents into the bottle and shaking it to lightly coat the outside of the capsules in Triphala.  This way, you get the therapeutic benefit of tasting the herb in a milder, less intense form.)

Take Triphala nightly before bed.  Take 2 capsules. If taking the powder, mix 1/2 teaspoon of Triphala powder with hot water to make a tea or put it directly on your tongue and wash it down with warm water.  For some people, the taste of Triphala is extremely bitter (it's the taste we lack most in the Western diet).  It's OK to use a little bit of honey to make it more palatable.  If the taste is unpleasant at first, don't worry and don't stop taking it.  While the flavor of Triphala may never become a favorite, it does become less intense as your body detoxifies.
